Alliance News Dr. Stanley Hamilton wins inaugural Arts Board Member of the Year award The Greater Vancouver Alliance for Arts and Culture together with the Society to Bridge Arts and Community has named Dr. Stanley Hamilton the inaugural winner of the new Arts Board Member of the Year award. Presented at the Alliance Arts Fete on December 6, this unique award was created by the two organizations to recognize the outstanding efforts of those who contribute generously of time, spirit and experience to the success of arts and culture boards in Metro Vancouver. Congratulations to Dr. Hamilton and all the nominees who were honoured at the event: Kathleen Bourchier, Jane Heyman, Darlene Howard, Joyce Johner, Gloria Loree and Rob O'Dea. Campaign for increased investment in the BC Arts Council Under the banner of Arts Future BC, the Alliance has been working with Pro Arts (Victoria), the Assembly of BC Arts Councils, the BC Touring Council, and many individuals representing many organizations, constituencies and regions of the province, to ensure an increased investment in the BC Arts Council is part of the next provincial budget. Arts Future BC has prepared a brief for the provincial finance committee to make the case for the investment and this is now available for public distribution. New Executive Director at the Alliance The board of directors of the Greater Vancouver Alliance for Arts and Culture is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Wilhelm-Boyles to the position of Executive Director. Currently the National Director of the Creative City Network of Canada, an organization of people employed by municipalities across Canada working on arts, culture and heritage policy and planning, Mr. Wilhelm-Boyles will be taking the helm at the Alliance at the end of February. Alliance bids farewell to Executive Director The board of directors of the Greater Vancouver Alliance for Arts and Culture has announced that Executive Director, Heather Redfern, will be leaving the Alliance to pursue another opportunity in the Vancouver arts community. Heather joined the Alliance in September 2004 and will be departing at the end of December to take on the role of Executive Director at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. Read more. Federal budget cuts take a toll on arts and culture sector Budget cuts announced yesterday by the federal government will impact Canada’s arts and culture sector on a number of fronts. A $4.6 million cut to the Museums Assistance Program, which is half the funding for the program administered through the Department of Canadian Heritage, will further strain a sector that has been working with all political parties on a new Museums Policy and a new investment. Federal budget: $50 million increase over two years for Canada Council for the Arts Vancouver, BC (May 2, 2006) The federal budget, which was released today, includes a $50 million increase over two years for the Canada Council for the Arts and is a positive first step in the government’s commitment to culture. The increased public investment in Canada’s arts and culture sector will be $20 million for 2006/2007 and $30 million for 2007/2008. Vancouver, BC (February 21, 2006) The 2006/2007 provincial budget includes $3 million for the Arts, Culture and Heritage line of the budget of the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Arts.

Arts and culture figure prominently in provincial Speech from the Throne Vancouver, BC (February 14, 2006) The provincial government emphasized the importance of arts and culture in today’s Speech from the Throne and indicated that investments are forthcoming in these important sectors. “The new world is a truly global economy, driven by information, ideas, and discoveries. Culture Committee lost from Vancouver Park Board The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation passed a motion at its Monday, January 16, 2006 board meeting that eliminated the Culture and Recreation Committee. Seven community delegations including the Alliance for Arts and Culture, Public Dreams Society, Community Arts Council of Vancouver, Jericho Arts Committee, Friends of Victory Square and French Arts and Culture Council for BC, attended the meeting to address the motion, which reinstated the Park Board’s finance and planning committee but not the Culture and Recreation committee that served the city under the previous board. The Alliance will be monitoring the Parks Board’s planning committee to ensure they are fulfilling their commitment to a holistic approach to planning which includes arts and culture.
