Embracing the Social Power of the Arts: How to Create Values-Based Arts Education Programs

Changes in the BC curriculum present arts organizations with many opportunities to create meaningful, values-based education programs that align with the new core competencies at the foundation of the curriculum. This workshop will examine what is possible when the mission of an arts organization becomes the foundation for both school and community programming. Current ideologies in arts education will be addressed and examples of values-based programs will be presented as case studies for what is possible.

Colleen Maybin is the director of education and community engagement at Vancouver Opera. A passionate advocate for arts education, Colleen has more than 20 years experience as an arts educator. Prior positions include teaching with the Vancouver and Delta School Boards, faculty advisor in teacher education at the University of British Columbia, arts manager at Regent’s College in London, England and district manager, Surrey with Arts Umbrella. She is currently a PhD candidate in arts education at Simon Fraser University.

Are you an arts organization or arts manager who wants to know best practices for including d/Deaf artists and audiences? This workshop highlights Canadian d/Deaf artists and the challenges they face; goes over common mistakes made by organizations seeking to engage with this population; and gives you the tools to partner with d/Deaf artists and participants.

Deaf Culture Without Borders is facilitated by Landon Krentz, general manager of Theatre Terrific and the only Deaf arts administrator on the West Coast of Canada. Landon is fluent in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English. He is an advocate for the inclusion of d/Deaf artists within the larger theatre community so that Deafness is looked upon as a reflection of diversity rather than as a disability.
