Vancouver-born multimedia artist Jeremy Shaw was awarded the $50,000 Sobey Art Award on November 1. The announcement was made at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

Shaw was one of five artists nominated, each of whom represent a different region of Canada. Shaw represented the West Coast and Yukon. The other finalists (Brenda Draney of Alberta, Charles Stankievech of Ontario, Hajra Waheed of Quebec and William Robinson from Atlantic Canada) will be awarded $10,000 each. The work of all the finalists has been on display at the National Gallery of Canada since Oct. 6.

The jury statement commended Shaw's work for "[speaking] to a fundamental longing for transcendence. [Shaw] creates and reflects extraordinary experiences and shows us how art can translate what is challenging to articulate."
