Vancouver city councillor Elizabeth Ball has announced she is seeking the BC Liberal nomination in Vancouver-Fairview, which is currently represented by NDP MLA George Heyman. Ball is an arts advocate and Alliance member who founded Carousel Theatre and is a former president of the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame.

The BC Liberal candidate will be chosen February 19. The only other declared candidate is communications consultant Gabe Garfinkel. Ball has indicated that should she be nominated, she would time her resignation from council so as not to trigger a by-election.

Her prospective opponent, George Heyman, is the NDP critic for the environment, green economy, and technology. Heyman also has a history in Vancouver arts and culture as an editor and published writer, as well as a board member of The Elbow Theatre. He won the Vancouver-Fairview riding in 2013 from B.C. Liberal Margaret MacDiarmid.

[Update 02/01/17: The post has been updated to note George Heyman's history in the Vancouver arts community. The Alliance wishes to stress that this post is not intended as an endorsement of any candidate. Though we are advocates for BC arts and culture and seek to engage in constructive dialogue with both sitting officials and prospective candidates, the Alliance is impartial and does not endorse political candidates for any office. As new candidates emerge who have notable connections to arts and culture, or significant arts and culture components to their platforms, we may share this news with our members and subscribers as a means of advocacy and education, rather than endorsement.]
