The Santa Aloi Award - The Isadora Awards - The Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award

Deadline: February 4, 2011

The Santa Aloi Award

The Santa Aloi Award, valued at up to $4,500, will assist choreographers to hire dancers to rehearse and perform new work. All types of professional dance projects are eligible but special consideration will be given to contemporary dance, ballet, tap and cultural forms.

The award is made possible through the generosity of Michael Fellman in honour of Santa Aloi, a dancer & choreographer known for her poignant storytelling through tap, music and contemporary dance. Originally from New York, where she danced with Gus Solomons Jr, she was a founding member of what is now the School for the Contemporary Arts at SFU. She served as Chair of the Board of The Dance Centre for eight years and is currently a member of The Dance Centre’s Choreographer’s Circle.

The Isadora Awards: Celebrating Excellence in BC’s Dance Community

The Artistic Advisory Committee of The Dance Centre is inviting nominations for the 2010 Isadora Awards. Initiated by The Dance Centre in 1999, the Awards recognize professionals who have made an outstanding contribution to dance in BC, and provide the professional community with an opportunity to celebrate its own achievements.  Awards will be given in two categories: Excellence in Performance, and Excellence in Choreography.

The Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award

The Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award was established in 2002 to support and promote innovative emerging choreographers in British Columbia. On the occasion of the celebration of the life of Iris Garland, her husband James Felter and friends, colleagues, dance enthusiasts and professionals from around North America gave generous donations to mark Iris Garland's significant contribution to the development of contemporary dance and her involvement in this field in British Columbia and in Canada.  These donations form the core of this biennial Award. Recipients to date are Amber Funk Barton (2005), Chengxin Wei (2007) and Sara Coffin (2009).

The Award is valued at $5,000 and is presented every two years to a senior dance student or emerging dance artist between 19 and 35 years of age who demonstrates exceptional choreographic ability and the potential to realize a future in the creative realm of dance.
