The Arts Club Theatre Company is Western Canada’s largest professional theatre company. Now in its 53rd season, this non-profit charitable organization produces and presents year-round at three venues—the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, Granville Island Stage, and Goldcorp Stage—as well as on tour throughout the province. Job Description: 

The Arts Club Theatre is currently accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Regular Assistant Stage / Fit-up Carpenter. This position is part-time under an IATSE 118 agreement and will work under the supervision of the Technical Director of the Production Shop in pre-production and the Technical Directors for the Arts Club venues on installs. Hours of employment will be as required. This part-time permanent position.

Responsibilities: 

Duties will include, but not limited to:
•Set construction in scene shop
•Assist with set fit up and tear down in the production shop
•Supervise and assist with fit up and strike in different Arts Club venues and attend to notes
•Supervise and assist with truck loading/ unloading
•Advise and assist with on-going stage & scenery maintenance

Qualifications: 

Specific skills will include, but not be limited to:
•Broad knowledge of theatrical procedures, tools and products
•Thorough knowledge of all aspects of scenic construction
•Able to read and understand designer blue prints (e.g. floor plans, elevations, lighting plots)
•Proficient working knowledge of counter weighted fly systems and set up, rigging and strike of scenery
•Proven ability to operate and maintain motorized stage equipment and scenery
•Knowledge of theatrical stage lighting including hang, focus, and maintenance
•Experience driving and packing a 5 ton truck
•Proven ability to supervise, train, and support assigned union staff
•Ability to establish priorities, report on projects and achieve deadlines
•Take direction and work under time constraints with minimal supervision
•Demonstrated strong organization and problem solving skills

Mandatory requirement;
•At least 2 years’ experience as a stage technician
•Able to work at heights / climb ladders
•Able to repeatedly lift, push or maneuver heavy loads, either alone or with assistance from others
•Valid BC Driver’s License, able to drive a 5 ton truck
•Preference may be given to persons holding additional certificates for one, or all of the following; 
Supervisor Safety, WHMIS, 1st Aid, a valid B.C. driver’s license, LPEC, Pyrotechnic and/or Firearms certificate

The Assistant Stage Carpenter will be self-motivated and have excellent communication skills and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Must be flexible in outlook and approach to the position and be diplomatic in dealing with crews, cast, stage managers and all other staff.
