Rennie Collection is an internationally renowned contemporary art collection. We maintain Rennie Museum, a privately funded museum that is open to the public. Rennie Museum presents three ambitious exhibitions yearly and its programming is offered free to the public.

Job Description: 

We are currently seeking an experienced fine art technician to assist with collection and museum exhibition preparations. This position reports directly to the Exhibitions Manager.

Responsibilities: 

  • work closely with museum senior staff and artists to produce and maintain high-quality exhibitions by assisting in the planning, preparation, security, installation and de-installation of exhibitions and other display materials, including maintaining gallery walls and building display units for exhibitions
  • accurate and timely updates to inventory in database
  • produce detailed and accurate condition reports
  • maintain galleries, art storage areas, and preparatory spaces, and when necessary, perform some basic building maintenance
  • care of artworks in the permanent collection
  • pack and unpack incoming and outgoing works of art
  • load and unload truck and van deliveries, and transport artwork locally
  • maintain shop equipment and oversee the safe operation of security doors, fire exits, and alarm systems
  • when necessary, arrange for, install and operate audio-visual equipment for exhibitions, meetings and public events
  • assist with the set-up and take-down of museum-related functions

Qualifications: 

Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent (BFA or other Bachelor’s degree an asset)
  • minimum two years in exhibit preparation and/or art handling
  • must have a valid BC Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • able to work occasional irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • ability to plan, prioritize, schedule and implement projects simultaneously, and oversee a variety of projects
  • strong time management and problem-solving ability; pragmatic organizational skills, with ability to meet deadlines efficiently
  • working knowledge of art handling procedures for two-and–three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights, including the rigging and movement of art, mount making principles, and lighting concepts 
  • knowledge of art handling practices and procedures: safe art storage, packing, crating, and transport techniques and procedures
  • ability to explain and carry out methods and procedures relating to the handling of irreplaceable objects of art
  • ability to interpret working drawings and implement design concepts, and knowledge of the design and construction of museum exhibits
  • experience in using standard tools, practices and methods in painting and basic carpentry
  • some audio-visual experience an asset
  • skill in the safe use and care of standard hand and power tools; and knowledge of safety regulations, practices and procedures
  • have a proven appreciation for high value works of art and a solid knowledge of artists' methods, materials and techniques
  • excellent attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate (both verbally and in writing)

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • ability to climb ladders and stairs and work on scaffolding or ladders 
  • able to lift materials up to 50 pounds without assistance
  • ability to stoop, bend, kneel and to stand for up to eight (8) hours per day
  • ability to safely operate power tools, and other equipment and machinery that require constant attention
  • ability to work around paints, solvents, and other similar products in a gallery environment
