Job Description: 

The Vancouver Symphony is the third largest orchestra in Canada, with an annual operating budget of just over $13 million. The Orchestra performs 150 concerts annually in some fourteen series in its home, the Orpheum Theatre, and numerous venues throughout Lower Mainland British Columbia.  In addition, the VSO can be heard regularly across Canada and the Northern United States on CBC radio broadcasts. Music Director Bramwell Tovey’s contract has been renewed to the 2014-2015 season.

Responsibilities: 

The Artistic Operations and Education Assistant reports to the Vice-President, Artistic Operations and Education, and the Education Manager. S/he is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of the VSO’s education programs, including Elementary School Concerts, Symphonic Encounters (open rehearsals), Clinics and Masterclasses, Jean Coulthard Readings, VSO Connects, Instrument Fair and Tiny Tots.  S/he is expected to work closely with the Vice-President, Artistic Operations and Education, the Education Manager, and the entire Artistic Operations team in conjunction with the successful presentation and implementation of the aforementioned programs. S/he will perform backstage duties, as needed, and assist with administrative, research and library support.

Qualifications: 

Required

  • extensive knowledge of classical / orchestral music
  • background in education (preferably music education)
  • excellent administrative and desktop environment skills (Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • ability to manage several projects simultaneously
  • superior written and verbal communication skills
  • strong time-management

 Advantageous

  • working knowledge of Tessitura software system, Microsoft Access and Adobe InDesign.
  • backstage experience (preferably orchestral)

Some evening and weekend work is required and candidates must hold a valid BC Driver’s License.
