Description: 

The University Community Children’s Choir (UCCC) is composed of approximately fifty children aged seven to fifteen from the vibrant community surrounding the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. In its first year, the Choir won first in its class at the 2008 Kiwanis Music Festival in Vancouver and was runner-up at the provincial level. As a member of the BC Choral Federation, the Choir has participated in a multi-choir performance at the prestigious Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and at a province-wide Choral Festival in Whistler. The choir has recently performed as invited guests of the Vancouver Youth Symphony Junior Orchestra, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and the International Kathaumixw Festival in Powell River. As a community ministry of University Chapel, the goal of the UCCC is to foster a caring community for the child participants and their parents while pursuing with dedication the choir’s musical potential. 

 

Responsibilities: 

The UCCC seeks a skilled, creative, and passionate Director who will uphold the choir’s reputation for providing a quality and engaging choral music education for children and youth.

  • Providing vision and leadership for the choir, choir parents, choir board, and choir staff 
  • Audition incoming choristers
  • Run weekly rehearsals 
  • Provide the choir with training in music theory, vocal technique, and in a variety of musical styles. 
  • Planning and programming for all concerts and events 
  • Liaise on a weekly basis with the University Chapel staff team
  • Meet bi-monthly with the choir board
  • Function as manager of the choir by leading financial development, board development, long-term planning, recruitment, choir communications, day-to-day choir administration, hiring of choir staff, and management of choir staff and volunteers
  • Maintain a strong and positive connection between the choir and the surrounding community

Concerts and Special Events:

  • 2 full length concerts at University Chapel
  • 2 performances in the University Chapel Sunday morning worship service
  • 1-2 additional performances in the community (for example: Kiwanis Festival, collaboration with another musical organization, singing at a community event, etc.)
  • 1 BC Choral Federation Children’s Chorfest weekend event
  • 1 major fundraising event
  • Promotion of the choir at the annual Point Grey Fiesta
  • 1 special choir trip every second year
Qualifications: 
  • Extensive musical training in voice and keyboard. A bachelors degree in music is strongly preferred. 
  • Extensive experience in teaching children
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in working for a non-profit organization
  • The ideal candidate would be an individual who is willing to become a member of University Chapel’s church fellowship because of the strong ties between the choir and the church

Remuneration: 

Approximately $13,200. Negotiable and dependent on experience and enrollment.
