Description: 

The Friends of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives Society, acting on behalf of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives, is seeking an energetic, conscientious individual to provide assistance to the Museum Collection Coordinator.  30 hours per week (7.5 hours/day; Tuesday-Friday)  Start Date:     June 14, 2011             End Date:       August 27 or September 2, 2011(awaiting Service Canada decision) 

Responsibilities: 

The Curatorial and Collections Assistant will assist with a variety of museum collection management and curatorial tasks, such as: researching and preparing objects for a temporary exhibit; preparing storage supports and packing artifacts; organizing and inventorying museum and education collection storage; updating documentation and database records; and helping photograph artifacts. The position is suitable for a college or university student pursuing studies in a related field.  At the end of the work term, the Curatorial and Collections Assistant will have gained experience in museum practices and procedures, record keeping and data entry, care of historic artifacts, research and documentation, and artifact storage techniques.

Qualifications: 

The successful applicant will have an interest in history and pursuing a career in museums or archives, good material culture research skills, a high degree of computer literacy, ability to maintain accuracy, effective interpersonal and organizational skills, and excellent written and spoken English language skills. The successful applicant may be enrolled in related coursework such as History, Museum Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology Art History or the Visual Arts.

 

Terms of Employment: This position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program of Service Canada and subject to hiring restrictions imposed by that program. The position is open only to applicants between the ages of 15 and 30, who attended school full time last year and intend to return to school full time next year. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.

Remuneration: 

Salary:            $13.75 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, to be paid with final cheque.
