Job Information
Reporting to the Associate Director and coordinated by the Public Programs Co-ordinators, the Educator will assist in development, delivery and facilitation of tours and workshops to visitors at the Vancouver Art Gallery specifically; they execute school programs, family programs and in-Gallery adult tours. The Educator will work with the appropriate areas, predominately in this case the Families programs and adult tours, to help shape and deliver a continual program of tours and workshops delivered to children and adults primarily on the weekends.
Tours and workshops are part of the regular and continual provision to ensure the Galley’s commitment to life-long learning. They contribute to the understanding and engagement with historic, modern and contemporary art as they relate to the exhibitions and collections at the Gallery. The ambition is to provide a program that introduces visitors, both adults and children to the works on display, art history, art, and other forms of cultural production.
As part of this provision, the functions of the Educator include: preparing and reading about relevant exhibitions and works of art; working closely with the Education and Public Programs Co-ordinators in preparing workshops, activities and tours; ensuring most innovative said programs and assessing their success all on levels, assisting in the ongoing commitment to research, knowledge and access; developing strategies of how to work in the galleries, discover creative solutions for talking and asking questions about art; working on the development of workshop based programs; at all times to ensuring greater knowledge and enjoyment of visitors. The incumbent will also perform related work when required.
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by two years of university or college education in Art History, Studio Art, Art Education, Museum Studies or equivalent. Experience working in the visual arts field, in particular a museum educational programs delivering tours, workshops and programs. The successful applicant must have a working knowledge of historic, modern and contemporary art, art history and critical theory and the ability to adapt and perform interpretive talks, workshops and programs to groups and individual visitors of various ages and knowledge bases. Exceptional communication and public speaking skills are necessary. A clear understanding of how to engage with advanced as well as novice visitors and the ability to think quickly in public and be receptive to audiences and their needs. Flexibility in schedule is an asset.

SALARY: Pay Grade 15, Step 1 $19.10 plus a percentage in lieu of benefits.
