The National Nikkei Museum & Heritage Centre is a multi-use facility in Burnaby, BC. Officially opened in September 2000, the Centre houses the National Nikkei Heritage Centre and the Japanese Canadian National Museum. The Centre’s mandate is to promote a better understanding and appreciation by all Canadians of Japanese Canadian culture and heritage; and an awareness by all Canadians of the contribution of Japanese Canadians to Canadian society, through public programs, exhibits, services, publications, public use of the facilities and special events.
Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the most senior position, providing strategic and operational leadership. Reporting directly to the ED are the Director-Curator, Rentals Coordinator, Accountant and Maintenance Coordinator.
We are looking for someone with an ability to exercise good judgment, multi-task with ease and create a working climate that promotes confidence and cooperation. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in a fast-paced, creative environment with a small but dedicated team, all working toward the common goal of fostering development in the Nikkei and greater communities.
This temporary position is a 13 month contract from August 2010-September 2011.
• Administration: manages all aspects of the administration of the NNMHC under the Society’s direction.
• Finances: manages the NNMHC’s finances, including managing operating and project budgets, and preparing monthly financial reports.
• Fundraising: prepares grant applications, liaises with Nikkei Place Foundation staff for strategic fundraising efforts, leads external relations efforts.
• Human Resources: manages direct reports (4); has ultimate responsibility for all other staff (10). Leadership responsibilities include supervision, recruitment, evaluation and discipline.
• Programs: oversees the implementation of programs in accordance with policies, directions and priorities established by the board.
• Facility: oversees facility operations, including maintenance and repairs.
• University degree, preferably in business management/administration.
• 4 years’ of related experience ideally in a not for profit environment in a leadership capacity.
(an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
• Effective human resource management experience.
• Current knowledge of and proficiency with payroll, general ledger and word processing software.
• Proven experience in project management -- ability to juggle multiple tasks, deadlines and priorities.
• A collaborative (we) team player.
• Ability to build rapport and relationships with diverse groups, donors and the community.
• Strategic thinker with a strong intuitive sense and down to earth style.
• Interest in Japanese Canadian history and heritage.
• Fluency including the ability to read/write in English is mandatory. Bilingualism in English and Japanese is preferred.
Working conditions: shared office, casual working environment, collaborative approach, PC platform.
Hours generally are 35 hours/week Monday to Friday, with some evening and weekend work for meetings and special events.
