Job Description: 

The Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to elevating and promoting the Indian dance form of Bhangra. The VIBC organizes two major annual events, the City of Bhangra Festival and the NEXT Bhangra Competition, in addition to partnering with numerous arts and community events throughout the year.

VIBC is looking for a dynamic, experienced Festival Manager to coordinate the City of Bhangra Festival running May 31, 2012 to June 10, 2012. This is a year round position starting part-time (February 2012) evolving to full-time (March 2012) during festival production and event, tapering to part-time after festival (July 2012 – March 2013). A minimum of 5 years related experience including event coordination and project management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities: 

Administration/Operations

Works closely with the Board of Directors and Committees to ensure the safe and smooth delivery of the festival:

  • Works with the Board of Directors to develop and manage the annual operating plans and budgets including regular financial reports to board members and committees
  • Oversees the general administration of the organization including Human Resources, IT and daily office administration and financial management
  • Responsible for technical and site management including:
    • Securing and maintaining multiple venues including liaising with property owners regarding access and conditions of use
    • Liaise with artistic teams to determine production design requirements, attend artistic planning and production meetings with artistic committees and board of directors
    • Contract production and technical staff
    • Overseeing all logistical and technical requirements such as lighting, sound, stage, electrical infrastructure, communication systems and other equipment required for productions
    • Maintain health and safety requirements, event safety manuals, risk assessments/ ensure effective and safe working practices at all times/develop and implement risk management plan
    • Develop production schedules for staff and artists
    • Determine all requirements for necessary permits and event licensing and apply for and secure permissions accordingly
    • Ensure adequate event insurance is in place
    • Work with Volunteer Manager to determine volunteer requirements
    • Coordinate set-up and tear-down activities
Qualifications: 

The Festival Manager position requires a demonstrated sense of leadership, vision, collaboration and team building with strong interpersonal skills, integrity, high energy and creativity. The role requires a minimum of 5 years experience in event management and a full understanding of the production process. A proven and strong background in financial and budget management as well as sound administrative and human resource skills is essential. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and able to work independently in a diverse and evolving atmosphere.
