Job Description: 

This is a temporary leave replacement position at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery from September 12, 2011 (flexible) to February 29, 2012. The position is part-time (40%) with the possibility of additional hours on a per project basis. The Graphics and Media Assistant is responsible for updating and maintaining the Gallery’s website, creating online exhibitions, and assisting with in-house graphic design and electronic media projects, including editing of digital videos and DVD authoring. The Graphics and Media Assistant assists with preparing and organizing a variety of photographic and digital images for documentation, publications, and advertising. The position may also assist with exhibition installations and other gallery duties as required.

Responsibilities: 

Updates and maintains Gallery’s website. Creates, updates and maintains online exhibits, ensuring there is consistency with design, aesthetic, and functionality of Gallery’s website. Creates and updates in-house graphic design projects such as brochures, ads, signage, and other promotional and didactic material in collaboration with the Public Programs/Publicity Coordinator. Performs digital video editing and DVD authoring for exhibitions, publicity, and funding applications and reports. Performs image scanning, colour correction, and manipulation for exhibitions, publicity, and funding applications and reports. Assists the Collections Manager/Head Technician and Preparator with preparing the gallery for exhibitions, moving and installing works of art, and dismantling exhibition installations, as required. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Administrator or Collections Manager/Head Technician.

Qualifications: 

High school graduation (BA or BFA degree preferred) plus two years related experience, with training in website design, electronic media and graphic design. Experience hand-coding to create dynamically generated web pages; knowledge of languages such as XHTML, CSS, XML, and Javascript. Multimedia programming experience, such as Flash with Actionscript, and technical understanding of various multimedia formats. Layout and design experience with software such as Adobe In Design, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Familiarity with design principles behind widely used browsers, including browser-specific features and limitations regarding HTML and CSS implementation. Knowledge of contemporary and video art production and practices. Experience in digital video editing, DVD authoring, and DVD and CD-ROM production an asset; knowledge of software such as DVD Studiopro 3.0, Compressor, A. pack, and Final Cut Pro an asset. Experience working in an art gallery. Experience handling artworks according to museum standards an asset. Experience with Mac and PC operating systems in a networked environment. High degree of responsibility and ability to demonstrate personal initiative. Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
