Position: Interpreter I
Department: Learning Services
Reports To: Director of Learning
Salary: This is auxiliary, shift work primarily on weekends. Weekday and evening work may be required. Pay Grade 12 ($15.81/hour) plus 12% in lieu of benefits. This position falls under the jurisdiction of CUPE Local 15. Interpretive work is initially focused in the areas of public and birthday party programming.

Nature of Position
Learning is an important aspect of the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre mandate. Every day visitors of all ages are engaged with a sense of wonder about the universe, our planet and space exploration. The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is seeking a dynamic individual to present short programs like activities during birthday parties or activities in our gallery spaces.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Working with staff in Learning Services, the interpreter is expected to act with initiative, work independently and as part of a team to set up and deliver activities. The incumbent will assist with the care of supplies; present short programs using props, audiovisual and program materials; answer questions during presentations; make suggestions regarding presentation improvements; perform routine office support functions; and provide information to the public regarding general Space Centre programs. The work is performed under general supervision and in accord with established policies and procedures. Work performance is evaluated by a superior in terms of the quality of services rendered to the public.

Ability to effectively communicate and present routine programs and activities to children and adults
Good organizational skills with the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and function effectively without direct supervision
Working knowledge of astronomy, space science, and sustainability
Some knowledge of interpretation techniques as they relate to work performed
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts
Sufficient physical strength to load and unload program materials and supplies
Grade 12 plus some related experience in interpretation techniques or an equivalent combination of training and experience
