Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach-An Arts Umbrella Project (SMMO) is a music outreach program offered free-of-charge to young people in Vancouver's inner city. Students receive high quality music instruction in both contemporary and classical traditions, in guitar, piano, percussion, voice, songwriting and new media. Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach is a place where young people can explore their creative potential and develop positive peer connections that will inspire them to succeed in life, in addition to building a life-long love of music and enthusiasm for learning. This outreach program is guided by the vision of founding partner, international singer/songwriter, Sarah McLachlan.
Arts Umbrella and the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach seek experienced professionals for the following instructional positions in the 2010.11 programming year.
Music courses at the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach for 2010-2011 (2 Terms)
Winter (11 weeks): Tuesday, January 4, 2011 – Sunday, March 20, 2011
Spring (9 weeks): Monday, April 4, 2011 – Sunday, June 5, 2011
Junior Music Fundamentals Instructor (Outreach: Florence Nightingale School)
Thursday, ages 7 – 9 3:00 – 5:15 PM *
(* includes travel, prep and clean up time)
Reporting to the Manager, candidates will have a degree in music, or currently studying at a post-secondary level, and past assisting or teaching experience combined with a proven ability to inspire creativity in youth and children. In addition, candidates will have experience with classical music education curriculum and a significant working understanding of pop, jazz, world music and folk idioms.
The successful candidate will be responsible for instructing two back-to-back, 45 minute group classes, of twelve students each, for a total of 1.5 hour per week. Classes will be scheduled for Thursdays at from 3:30 pm until 5:00 pm.
The candidate will be contracted to teach weekly at Florence Nightingale Elementary School (2740 Guelph Street) for the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach (77 East 7th Avenue) during the 2010/2011 programming year Terms 2 and 3, beginning Thursday, January 6, 2011 until Sunday, June 5, 2011. Compensation is commensurate with experience. The candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records Check and a reference check.
