POSITION OVERVIEW: This is professional supervisory Museum work involving the operation of a museum; including administration, programming, exhibit maintenance, collections maintenance and the operation of a post office outlet. It involves working with Museum & Heritage Services staff and a not-for-profit society to plan, develop, deliver and evaluate public programs and activities. The basis of programs use artefact and history based experiential, interactive learning from initial ideas, research and scheduling to delivery and evaluation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
•Knowledge of museum practices and principles.
•Knowledge in care and handling of artefacts.
•Knowledge and demonstrated ability in primary and secondary historical research.
•Knowledge of collections management and exhibit maintenance preferred.
•Knowledge of Canadian, British Columbian and Richmond history preferred.
•Ability to develop new program ideas in conjunction with exhibits or other activities within Steveston or at other museum and heritage sites.
•Ability to promote programs and activities through writing and distribution of public service announcements and media releases.
•Ability to develop, schedule, plan, promote, deliver and evaluate or arrange for others to deliver museum activities, public programs and special events.
•Ability to liaise effectively with internal and external contacts such as the Steveston Historical Society and Richmond Museum Society.
•Ability to deal with internal and external customers with tact.
•Ability to work with and manage volunteers, community groups and partners.
•Ability to maintain a records management system, including but not limited to photo documentation. •Ability to update web pages.
•Skill and ability to use City computer applications such as CLASS, databases and Microsoft Office. •Strong written and oral communication skills.
•Ability to successfully pass a Criminal Record Check.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND EFFORT: Work is performed in a museum. Occasional contact with hazardous materials in artefacts or on site due to the heritage nature of materials.
EXAMPLES OF WORK ACTIVITIES:
•Ensure exhibits and collections are being maintained to industry standards, communicating with collections and exhibit staff as necessary.
•Work in conjunction with Museum and Heritage staff, board members and others in the development and implementation of new program ideas for the Museum and/or Heritage sites.
•Responsible for marketing and promotion of the facility and programs to the community and general public, which involves working within the department’s marketing section, call centre and the Steveston Committee of Tourism Richmond.
•Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate summer and contract staff as well as volunteers to assist with programs and activities.
•Supervise, schedule and evaluate society post office staff.
•Respond to maintenance needs of the heritage building, ensuring work on the building is in keeping with conservation standards & guidelines.
•Photograph events and programs for use in future Parks, Recreation and Culture guides and other promotional activities. •Participate in annual volunteer recognition activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in related discipline such as History or Archaeology supplemented by courses in museum studies, exhibit and artefact based programming, volunteer management and communications. A minimum of 2 years of experience including museum, heritage and/or artefact based programming is required.
