Job Description: 

Reporting to the Director and Curator of Education and Public Programs, the incumbent will utilize knowledge and experience of the visual arts, critical theory, art history and a broad awareness of other creative practices and culture generally to conceive, develop and lead on Education and Public Programs for Adults audiences. These audiences hold both specialist as well as non-specialist interests and knowledges.

 

The Education and Public Program events will vary in format ranging from gallery talks and tours to conferences and lectures. The gallery is aiming over the next five years to raise the profile locally, nationally and internationally of its critical and theoretical debates on visual arts and culture.

 

It is imperative that the incumbent has experience hosting, conceptualising, leading and orchestrating public discussions and a clear understanding and interest in how critical debate and discussion is being conceived both within the gallery and museum context and beyond. They must understand and be able to explore how best to contextualise the Gallery programs and lead in the formation of live debate and discussion, hold a strong knowledge of the international context in which they are working and have a wide breadth of connections with various cultural and arts practitioners, institutions, and companies. They must have the ability to build on relationships and the Gallery’s networks to further develop partnerships locally and internationally with the aim of working collaboratively when possible.

Responsibilities: 

Duties will include the following: conceiving and delivery of all adult lectures, conferences, gallery talks and other programs; the training and coordination of the part-time educators; developing and managing a core group of volunteers who assist in the delivery of events; managing established budgets; coordinating logistics of events and managing internal briefings; developing and maintaining relationships locally, nationally and internationally. A key area will also be to work on the on-line archive of activity as well as the continual contribution to the creative and intellectual strategy of public programs.

Qualifications: 

University graduate at least a Bachelor’s level in an arts related field from a recognised university plus three years related experience as a curator, arts educator or public programmer in an art gallery/museum or educational environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An in-depth knowledge of critical theory, visual arts, art history, creative practices, and contemporary culture; comprehensive knowledge of the local, national and international academic and artistic communities; excellent writing skills; an ability to communicate complex ideas effectively to a range of audiences; to manage several projects simultaneously; to work calmly, creatively and effectively to deadlines; to manage budgets; to source and submit grant and trust applications when applicable; in possession of strong public presentation skills and some teaching experience if possible.

Remuneration: 

SALARY:   Pay Grade 23, $25.90 per hour, plus benefits or a % in lieu

HOURS:  Flexible work schedule, 63 hours bi-weekly
