Job Description: 

Our Technical Director plans, coordinates and executes all aspects of The Cultch and rental productions including, but not limited to, the setup, operation and striking of shows, as well as to assist in implementing maintenance of all theatre systems and equipment. This is a full-time position with salary and benefits as negotiated with IATSE Local 118 at The Cultch.

Responsibilities: 

Reporting to the Director of Operations (DOO), the Technical Director will supervise the installation, operation and/or strike of shows in and at The Cultch in the capacity of crew chief and/or operator as the shows requires. Duties will include, but not be limited to:
 Ensuring all technical elements are in place for opening night of all productions to the DOO’s satisfaction
 Direct load ins, set ups, strikes, load outs, returns & proper disposal of all technical elements at the cultch venues
 Set-up, run and strike of single day rental shows
 Crew supervision in the theatre (Cultch presentations & client rentals)
 Assist the DOO with scheduling and organizing for installation, performance and strike at The Cultch venues
 Repair and maintenance of all technical equipment
 Required training and upgrading
Supervision shall include checking that all work is done in a manner that ensures the safety of the staff, performers and patrons of The Cultch. All of the above duties and responsibilities to be conducted in the most cost effective manner, ensuring the production stays on schedule and to alert the Director of Operations of any cost or time overruns in a timely manner.

Qualifications: 

 Minimum 5 years experience from graduation with a diploma or equivalent experience in the Theatre & Performing Arts
 Able to work weekends and holidays
 Experience in staffing, scheduling and supervision
 Computer skills including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint & Access; knowledge of Vectorworks 12.5 an asset
 Excellent working knowledge of the ETC ION and ETC Express 3.1 or better and a solid understanding of digital audio operation
 IASTE membership – permittee or full
 Valid BC drivers license
 Level 1 Occupational First Aid certificate is an asset
 An ability to handle unexpected situations with a smile and work in a team environment
 A love of the performing arts
Extensive personal skills are required re: working with a diverse group of renters, producers, directors, artists, other staff and IATSE crew.

Skills and knowledge are required in all areas including, but not limited to; computers and software, computerized theatre lighting systems and effect equipment, sound systems, some sound recording and sound equipment in general, video equipment, installation and usage, video projection equipment re: projection, recording and usage, staging systems, pyro, Firearms Certificate is an asset, public emergency situations, fire and audience safety issues, orchestral equipment, some rigging and related issues (certification is an asset), theatre and set carpentry, shop and stage tools safety, scheduling and inter-show scheduling and coordination.

The Technical Director will know (or be required to learn) current rules of WCB, and other government bodies as required as well as the current IATSE 118 Union agreement. Training will be provided for the Head Electrician in all of the above areas as time permits. The Head Electrician will be expected to keep up to date with the changes as required by law and the job description.

Hours of Work: This is a full-time, contract position based on a 40 hour work week commencing March 7, 2010. Most work hours will take place in the late afternoon and evenings including weekends. Days off are flexible and based on the performance schedule.
This job is a union position governed by the terms and conditions of the Technical Collective Agreement between Vancouver East Cultural Centre and IATSE Local 118.

Remuneration: 

Salary: $38,000 – 45,000 + 4.5% IATSE medical / dental program & 4% RRSP contribution
