Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society
The non-profit Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society operates the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site in Richmond, BC. Constructed in 1894, the Cannery was once the largest processor of canned salmon in the British Empire. After closing its doors in 1979, the local community lobbied to save the building. Parks Canada took over the building as a place to commemorate the history of fishing on Canada's west coast.
Today the Cannery is a dynamic museum featuring guided tours, interactive exhibits and thought-provoking temporary exhibits and events that can range from art installations to opera. It also includes a collection of 10,000 artifacts relating to the fishning industry and features a large gift shop specializing in local products.
