Kickstart Disability Arts and Culture

Kickstart was incorporated as the Society for Disability Arts and Culture and registered as a not-for-profit Society in British Columbia, in November 1998. Kickstart has been a local, national and international leader in the disability arts sector for over 10 years, with international disability arts festivals presented in 2001, 2004, and 2007 in Vancouver and Victoria, and has initiated creation, artist development and networking activities.

Kickstart creates, commissions, and presents work from a range of disciplines, including theatre, dance, music, visuals arts and film/media. We provide workshop and development opportunities to artists, and support mentoring situations for artists with disabilities. We work to offer accessible arts events, and with other arts organizations to present work in accessible ways, e.g, at fully wheelchair accessible venues, American Sign Language Interpretation, venues with Hearing Loops, CART -Captioning in Real Time, and more recently Audio Description - for vision impaired audiences. Kickstart has been working to coordinate a strategic planning process for disability arts creators and presenters in this province, called the BC Regional Integrated Arts Network BRIAN.

Kickstart's mission is to produce and present works by artists with disabilities and to promote artistic excellence among artists with disabilities working in a variety of disciplines. http://www.s4dac.org/

Our Objectives are to:

1. produce cross-disciplinary festivals of disability arts and culture;

2. encourage and support artists to create and present authentic interpretations of the

disability experience;

3. provide opportunities for the development and advancement of artists with disabilities;

4. promote practices that will make the arts more accessible to all members of the
