Norman Rothstein Theatre

The Norman Rothstein Theatre (NRT) established and incorporated in 1994 and operated by the Vancouver West Side Theatre Society, is a fully equipped 318 seat performing arts proscenium theatre venue for the presentation of dance, music, theatre, film and literary events. The theatre was created to enhance the cultural life of both the Jewish and General communities.  The Theatre features a complete sound and lighting system, a full-size movie motorized front projection screen and commercial projectors, dance floor and a Steinway Grand piano. Centrally located in the heart of the beautiful Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, the facility is wheelchair accessible, air-conditioned, has onsite parking and is two blocks from a skytrain station. The NRT and its main artistic programming activities, The Chutzpah! Festival, Music Concerts and Creative Dance Residencies:

  • Entertains, inspires, educates and enriches its audiences
  • Promotes communication and understanding between Jewish and non-Jewish communities and contributes through the performing arts to the multi-cultural fabric of Canadian society and excellence in professional performing and cultural arts.

Chutzpah! The Lisa Nemetz International Showcase of Jewish Performing Arts: www.chutzpahfestival.com

was established in 2001 to allow the community to support artists and their collaborators in creating and performing meaningful work. The Chutzpah! Festival fosters artistic growth by crossing cultural and generational boundaries as well as artistic disciplines and embraces a broad spectrum of programming choices in dance, theatre and music that attracts a diverse audience base from the community at large. Since 2005 there have been continuous increases in media attention and attendance and is now an established festival known especially for its high-caliber dance and music programming and marketing and publicity strategies.
