Inspiration, provocation, innovation...nomination.

Artists enrich our lives by inspiring us, provoking thought and presenting innovative ideas. Now the public has an opportunity to recognize its favourite artists by nominating them for the first-ever Vancouver Arts Awards.

Presented by the City of Vancouver, one of this year’s Cultural Capitals of Canada, and the Alliance for Arts and Culture, the Vancouver Arts Awards will celebrate established and emerging artists in eight categories: design arts, visual arts, performing arts, culinary arts, media and recording arts, writing and publishing, philanthropy and people’s choice. Nominations close Monday, November 24. The Awards will honour the achievement of artists who have contributed to the creativity of the city through a body of work produced over a number of years, and honour the promise of new artists who will receive commissions to create new works.

"Vancouver has a thriving and diverse arts and culture community, and the Vancouver Arts Awards will not only honour renowned artists, but will give up-and-coming artists prestigious commissions to further their careers," says Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell.

The Awards will be presented at a gala in March, 2004, and the ceremony will be featured through excerpts on Vancouver’s two CBC Vancouver radio stations. CBC Radio will also air artist profiles throughout the month of March, and CBC Television is exploring broadcast. Recipients will be selected by peer juries, with the exception of the winner of the People’s Choice Award, who will be selected by the general public.

The Alliance for Arts and Culture, an arts marketing and advocacy organization comprised of members of Vancouver’s arts and culture community, is managing the Vancouver Arts Awards.

"We are pleased that the City is committed to furthering arts and culture in Vancouver, and we anticipate an excellent pool of nominations for the juries to review," says Lori Baxter, executive director of the Alliance for Arts and Culture. "Having CBC on board to broadcast the Awards is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the depth of creative talent in our community."

Nomination forms and information on the award categories are available online at www.vancouverartsawards.ca. Forms can also be picked up in person at the Alliance for Arts and Culture offices at 938 Howe Street in Vancouver, or by calling 604-681-3535.

Completed nominations must be received by November 24, 2003.
