The Burnaby Art Gallery (BAG) has been a staple of Metro Vancouver’s fine arts community for 50 years. With exhibitions that have featured top Canadian artists and a Permanent Collection of over 5000 pieces, the gallery is recognized as a strong supporter of artists and art production.
Volunteer Opportunity Description:
The Burnaby Art Gallery is currently seeking members to serve on the Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee (BAGAC), an appointed body of volunteers acting at arm’s length to assist the Director/Curator in the development of the Burnaby Art Gallery with respect to fundraising, programming and collection services.
Nominations must be submitted by November 20, 2017. Qualified applicants will be notified in early December and scheduled for an interview in January. The first meeting for new appointees will be held on January 9, 2018. The committee meets six times annually on the second Tuesday of the month.

Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee (BAGAC)
As an appointed body of volunteers acting at arm’s length, the Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory
Committee assists in the development of the art gallery with respect to programming and collection
a) To provide support in enhancing public awareness of the Burnaby Art Gallery.
b) To provide direction and assistance in securing corporate and private donations and/or sponsorships for gallery programs.
c) To provide direction and assistance in the delivery of fund raising events.
d) To assist in matters related to the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection.
e) To provide direction related to Burnaby Art Gallery programming initiatives
f) To provide assistance in developing Burnaby Art Gallery policies
a) Appointed by, and accountable to the management of the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee (BAGAC) consists of up to nine (9) voting members.
b) One voting member is a Parks, Recreation and Culture Commissioner, appointed annually for a one—year term, renewable up to six times continuously for the same member.
c) Up to five voting members may represent the business community with an interest in fostering the visual arts. This includes, but is not limited to: business owners, tourism professionals, dealers and collectors.
d) One voting member is a professional practicing artist.
e) One voting member is a professional educator.
f) One voting member of an under-represented constituency.
g) Terms are for two years. Members may apply for renewals of up to two, two year terms. Service
may be interrupted but total no more than four years per member.
h) Members are selected by the gallery management team through public responses to notices in
regional newspapers and on the gallery website calling for expressions of interest. Appointments
are made on an annual basis, as required, based on the calendar year.
i) A chair, who shall not be a Commission member, is selected by the members for a one year term.
A member may be elected chair for a maximum of two (2) years.
j) Advisory Committee member resignations must be in writing. Vacancies will be filled at the
discretion of the art gallery management team. Terms of those members replacing vacancies will
expire at the due date of the original member.
k) The gallery management team may remove a member for cause upon receipt of a report from the
Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee recommending so.
l) Any member missing three (3) consecutive meetings of the committee without reasonable cause
will be required to resign.
m) Quorum shall consist of five (5) members. Simple majority constitutes approval of motions.
n) The Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee will meet a minimum of six (6) times per annum.
4. Service Delivery
a) The Burnaby Art Gallery Director/Curator serves as secretary to the Burnaby Art Gallery
Advisory Committee and is responsible for gallery management, budgeting, and personnel,
reporting to the Assistant Director — Cultural Services.
b) In consultation with the Burnaby Art Gallery Advisory Committee the Director/Curator is
responsible for gallery programming and collections development.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate relevant experience or knowledge, abilities and skills related to the mandate of the committee.
- Preference will be given to applicants who live or work in Burnaby or have a significant body of experience with cultural and civic issues.
- Applicants may be self nominated or nominated by organizations.
- Applicants should be able to serve for the full two year term of the appointment.
- Successful candidates will serve without remuneration.
