Organization Description: 

The Sunset Theatre Society’s Mandate is to: nurture, develop, produce and present professional theatre in the remote and supportive environment surrounded by the Cariboo Mountains in Wells BC – year round population 250. Dedicated to the development of new Canadian theatre through our signature Exploration Series, the Sunset Theatre also hosts a Presentation Series, Concert Series, Workshops, the Annual Moonrise Film Festival of independent films and variety of community events. A thriving tourist trade at near-by Barkerville Historic Park and the remote location make the Sunset Theatre a unique and picturesque destination theatre, perfect for exploring and creating new work. Over the past year the Sunset Theatre has established an emphasis on Indigenous and First Nations Theatre.


Job Description: 

This is an excellent opportunity for any acting student wanting to pursue a career in devised theatre, theatre creation, aboriginal storytelling or play development. The Acting Apprentice will be immersed in all aspects of the creative process and take on the various roles required to fulfill the casting for the plays already in development at the Sunset Theatre.


The student will also be required to create the foundation for their own play that will be showcased at the end of the contract period. 

The Acting Apprentice will be involved in all rehearsals, creative process, readings, public performances, Sunset Cabarets, and community events such as the Arts Wells Festival. 

There is a focus on First Nations Theatre development this season and therefore the need to cast Aboriginal actors/actress is a priority.

The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to pursue a career in the professional theatre and is currently attending or will be attending a recognized theatre program; Consideration will be given to high school students who are creatively curious with a strong work ethic and a willingness to jump in. 

This is a CSJ position. All candidates must be able to legally work in Canada, be between the ages of 15 & 30; enrolled in school full time and intending to return to school in the fall. 

This position requires agility and flexibility, a sense of humour and the ability to live in a remote community with no cell phone service and limited internet. 

Wells is a very artistic and creative town and in the summer is filled with many students, tourists and professional artists. The Closest City is Quesnel – 75 kms.
