Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art
Apr. 20, 2018
The Bill Reid Gallery is the only public Gallery in Canada dedicated to Indigenous Northwest Coast Art, and was established by the Bill Reid Foundation in 2008 to celebrate the Haida master artist Bill Reid (1920 - 1998), and the diverse living cultures of the Northwest Coast.
The Gallery honours Bill Reid by exhibiting the Bill Reid SFU Art Collection, and presenting special exhibitions and programs that build bridges between all peoples, including Indigenous and settler populations. Our mandate is to promote a greater awareness of Indigenous cultures and values.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with an interest in Northwest Coast art and culture, and a background in First Nations Studies, Anthropology, or a related discipline. The successful applicant will work throughout the summer for 2-3 days a week, or more once tourist season begins. The successful applicant will report to the Satellite Shop Manager and will assist with customers, as well as tours and events at the Bill Reid Gallery. While this position is seasonal, it could lead to a permanent role. Training will begin in May.
One of the focuses of this position will be promoting local artists, and educating the public on Northwest Coast art. The successful applicant will assist with sales, and help with store merchandising. We are also keen to find someone who can be trained as a gallery docent, and provide support for events at the gallery.
The applicant should be a self-motivated creative individual, who is able to think outside the box. Sales, customer service, and public speaking are required skills. Experience in photography and graphic design is considered a major asset. We are looking for someone who is able to work on Sunday mornings. Indigenous applicants are encouraged to apply!
