Founded in 2001 by Joyce Lam, Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT) began as a community theatre filling a gap in Vancouver’s theatre industry. From 2001-2012, VACT collaborated with over 500 Asian Canadian theatre artists in over 40 productions. In 2013, VACT grew to become one of the most exciting diversity-mandated professional theatre companies in Canada.

VACT’s core mission is to develop and produce professional Asian-Canadian theatre productions, and provide opportunities for Asian Canadian talent in artistically and creatively significant roles. Since 2015, VACT’s hit show, Empire of the Son by Tetsuro Shigematsu, has toured across Canada three times and continues to delight audiences throughout Canada and receive unanimous critical praise. VACT’s MSG play development series provides opportunities for emerging Asian Canadian playwrights to develop new Canadian work in a professional setting. Loretta Seto’s smash hits Dirty Old Woman and The Ones We Leave Behind have gone on to become smash hits in Vancouver theatre over the last three years.

Job Description:

Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT) is looking for a General Manager to join our team. The General Manager is responsible for the administrative activities of the company, and for facilitating the administrative component of management and fundraising activities. The General Manager works closely with the Artistic Director in planning the activities of the company.

Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to VACT’s Board of Directors, the General Manager has a broad range of responsibilities including but not limited to:

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the company

  • Works closely with the Board of Directors, including attending Board meetings, sitting on Board committees and planning/attending strategic planning sessions

  • Support the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan and long-term vision

  • Management of human resources, including hiring and supervising part-time, full-time, and seasonal staff, maintaining and developing a healthy work culture;

  • Creation and execution of and compliance with VACT’s contractual agreements and obligations (e.g., ITA, CTA, co-productions, CAEA, ADC, etc);

  • Together with the Artistic Director, negotiates and executes presenting, co-production and venue agreements;

  • Negotiates and executes contracts for the self-employed personnel of the organization, including but not limited to: actors, designers, production personnel, playwrights and directors;

  • Coordinate all tour and showcase logistics for productions;

  • Other duties as needed;

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Develop, manage and reconcile operating budgets, and budgets for productions (including: mainstage productions, MSG Theatre Lab Play Development Program, tours, etc);

  • Daily management of accounts receivable and payable, and oversees all receipt of donations

  • Oversee year-end and maintain correspondence with the accountant in collaboration with the Bookkeeper

In partnership with the Artistic Director, the General Manager has co-managerial responsibilities with the Artistic Director for the following:

  • Reporting to the Board;

  • Preparing annual budgets for approval of the Board;

  • Communication with funding bodies;

  • Managing the VACT team and staff;

  • Managing major grants, including writing, submitting, monitoring, and reporting outcomes in accordance with established requirements;

  • Marketing and publicity, including raising the profile of VACT on the national and international stage and developing partnerships;

  • Representing VACT in and interacting with the Vancouver theatre community and theatregoers;

  • Ensuring VACT represents and is accessible to the broad and diverse community;

Qualifications:

  • University degree in a related field or a combination of equivalent experience;

  • Minimum three years’ experience managing a complex theatre environment with a reputation for quality and excellence, and familiarity with touring;

  • Demonstrated success in securing operational funding from government sources;

  • Ability to lead multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously, meeting all related deadlines;

  • Ability to work well under pressure and apply creative problem-solving techniques;

  • Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills to effectively work with a variety of people and personalities, including board, staff, volunteers, artists, media and government representatives;

  • Ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing; cross-cultural and intercultural experience is mandatory;
