Organization Description: 

Elia Kirby Productions Ltd (EKP Ltd.), doing business as the Great Northern Way Scene Shop (GNW), is a production services and custom fabrication company that builds sets, installations, and displays. In operation since 2003, the company has worked on over 1000 individual projects. With a diverse client-base that includes large institutions (e.g. Vancouver Art Gallery) to small nonprofits (e.g. Pacific Theatre) to corporate companies (e.g. TED Talks, Moment Factory, MEC), GNW operates year-round to produce an array of scenic projects and installations. Located at the western edge of the False Creek Flats and within the Arts Factory building, the GNW Scene Shop is dedicated to supporting Greater Vancouver's cultural community while providing employment to local artisans and craftspeople. GNW has 6,500 square feet of fabrication space, including a carpentry shop, paint facilities (fit-up area and spray booth), and a metal fabrication studio.


Job Description: 

We are looking to add to our roster of casual on-call crew including such casual on-call positions as: Scenic Carpenters, Painters, Welders, Fabricators, and Grips/Labourers.


Various positions have different job requirements and qualifications.

Scenic Carpenters & Helpers

  • Uses woodworking and carpentry tools and equipment according to build and manufacture approved designs and projects

  • Performs mathematical calculations in the construction of scenic elements

  • Reads and consults plans and blueprints with the ability to estimate time and materials required

  • Works in accordance with shop safety procedures to lay-out, assemble and construct scenic elements

  • Loads and unloads scenery to and from the shop, trucks, theatres, venues, and warehouses.

  • Installs and strikes scenic elements at various job locations

  • Follows shop and facility procedures to maintain a safe and effective work environment

  • Additional labourer duties, as required

Scenic Painters & Painters & Helpers

  • Prepares surfaces to be painted, using such techniques as scraping, caulking, sanding, patching, priming, and base painting (brush and roll) on various surfaces

  • Matches colours and mixes paints using colour matching for specific projects 

  • Paints faux and specialty finishes such as wood-graining, marbling, aging, sponging, rag rolling

  • Draws layouts, transfers designs, and paints onto backdrops and murals with a brush or airbrush

  • Uses painting and airbrushing to finish two-dimensional and three-dimensional fields and props

  • Completes roller painting and conventional spray painting to meet gallery and corporate standards

  • Organizes paint department and work areas before and after project execution, including cleaning up and storing tools and equipment, scraping, removing tape, cleaning brushes, resealing paint cans and cleaning paint buckets 

  • Follows shop and facility procedures to maintain a safe and effective work environment

  • Additional labourer duties, as required

Fabricators, Welders & Helpers

  • Uses metal fabrication tools, including by not limited to MIG, TIG and stick welding, and oxy-acetylene torch according to approved designs and projects;

  • Performs mathematical calculations in the construction of scenic elements related to welding, metalwork and fabrication

  • Ensures materials consumed in the fabrication department are tracked and reported in a timely and accurate manner 

  • Follows shop and facility procedures to maintain a safe and effective work environment

  • Additional labourer duties, as required

Grips/Specialty Labourers

  • Assists with the loading and unloading of materials and sets from trucks, hand-trucks, etc.

  • Works with project leads to assist in the installation and deinstallation (strike) of designs and/or projects at the shop and occasionally off-site

  • Receives and warehouses materials and other items for use in the shop, and ensures proper storage

  • Assists in clearing and organization of building, paint, and fabrication areas so that they are ready for safe and efficient work

  • Assists in the coordination of shop space and resource allocations and helps to prepare projects for installation off-site

  • Assists with efficient plant operations including regular maintenance and cleaning duties

  • Follows shop and facility procedures to maintain a safe and effective work environment

  • Additional labourer duties, as required


Required skills and experience vary by position. Applicants should send their resume/CV with clear indications of skills and experience in the various roles. Applicants may wish to include a portfolio or a link to their recent and relevant work. 

  • Experience in the fields of scenic carpentry, scenic painting, commercial painting, props building, welding, fabrication, technical theatre, production services, event logistics, and/or labour services, is an asset

  • Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs/22 kg and effectively use handtrucks, carts, and other safe methods of moving items

  • Knowledge of production and safety practices in the entertainment industry

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow directions and ask questions when things are unclear

  • Experience using customer service skills to maintain positive working relationships with clients, vendors, and venue staff

  • Steel toe boots/shoes and work clothes are required

Grips/Labourers start at $18/hr; Scenic Helpers start at $19/hr; Qualified Scenic Carpenters, Painters, and Fabricators start at $23/hr. Hourly wage will be based on a combination of experience and skill assessment based on a working interview.
