2018 Verses Festival of Words Volunteers April 19 - 29

Vancouver Poetry House - Verses

Apr. 15, 2018

Organization Description:

The Verses Festival of Words is a program of Vancouver Poetry House, a registered non-profit organization with charitable status since 2005. Vancouver Poetry House (VPH) also runs the Vancouver Poetry Slam, the longest-running slam in Canada, as well as WordPlay Poetry-in-Schools, and Hullabaloo: BC’s Youth Spoken Word Festival which is part of Verses. Verses Festival is organized by a super team of staff and lead volunteers headed by Artistic Director Jillian Christmas and Managing Director Pamela Bentley.

Verses Festival of Words is to celebrate the transformative power of words – written, spoken or sung; to engage diverse groups in cutting-edge, live performances as both audience and participants; to present influential artists from both the oral and literary traditions, and to encourage the next generation of performers and writers. Verses embraces a wide definition of literature and orature that includes page-based poetry, oral storytelling, and singer-songwriters.

Volunteer Opportunity Description:

Verses Festival of Words would not be able to happen without the help of volunteers. The festival runs from April 19 - April 29, 2018 with multiple events each day and each event needs a handful of people supporting it. We have opportunities requiring all types of interest and skill sets.

Throughout the festival we will need people to cover an array of different areas:
putting up posters / distributing programs
front-of-house /working the door
merchandise / book table
runner / errands
timekeeper / scorekeeper at slams
sponsorship team

This year we are also hoping to have office help in the couple of weeks before the festival; these tasks will include putting gift bags together and other tasks assisting the festival directors.

In addition to the great appreciation we have for their time and effort, and the experience they will have being part of the festival team, we offer our volunteers these incentives to volunteer so they get to see the performances and the artists Verses has to offer:
-1 shift = free admission to one show.
-2 shifts = free admission to three shows or 3 tickets to any shows.
-3 or more shifts = one free festival pass or up to 4 tickets to any shows.
-4 or more shifts = one free festival pass or up to 4 tickets to any shows and a festival t-shirt.
(a shift is 2 to 3 hours, generally, depending on the event and duties)

Responsibilities will vary based on what role you sign up for but include:

- putting up posters / distributing programs and posters
- front-of-house /working the door at venues
- merchandise / book table at events
- runner / errands at events
- timekeeper / scorekeeper at poetry slams during the festival: Hullabaloo, Vancouver Poetry Slam, Canadian Individual Poetry Slam championships
- sponsorship team making cold calls to businesses for in-kind donations
- office work
