Every week, the BC Alliance gives you a glimpse at five must-see member events. Here’s a look at what’s coming up in the near future:
Blood on the Dance Floor
First up: from a trio of BC Alliance members (DanceHouse, SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs, and Talking Stick Festival) comes the West Coast premiere of ILBIJERRI Theatre Company’s Blood on the Dance Floor. The show draws upon the personal experience of its creator and performer, Jacob Boehme, and “explores the struggle, heartache, and enduring spirit of someone living at the intersection of Aboriginal, queer, and HIV-positive communities.” Rich, radical, funny, and moving, Blood on the Dance Floor dives deep into questions of fear, stigma, and resilience.
(Vancouver: Feb. 6-9)
Made in Italy
Western Canada Theatre presents Made in Italy, “a raucous coming-of-age story about an Italian teenager growing up in Jasper in the 1970s, caught between two worlds and determined to make his mark.” If you’ve ever been young and felt different, you’ll find something in this play, written and performed by Farren Timoteo.
(Kamloops: Feb. 6-9)
Kevin Mooney Fire Hall Concert Series: Will’s Jams
Named in memory of Vancouver music fan and promoter Kevin Mooney, these all-ages concerts, co-presented by BC Alliance members the Vancouver International Children's Festival and The BlueShore at CapU, are great opportunities for the kids to enjoy live music in an unusual location: a Vancouver fire hall! The first concert takes place February 10 with Will’s Jams, and it’s sure to be a hot show (little fire humour there). Please bring donations for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.
(Vancouver: Feb. 10)
“Sewstainability” – Yeonmi Kim
In this exhibit, presented by the Sunshine Coast Arts Council, sustainability takes centre stage. Yeonmi Kim’s works use recycled materials to reproduce satellite images showing the effects of climate change.
(Sechelt: Feb. 6-Mar. 10; opening reception Feb. 10)
Year of the Pig Temple Fair
Lastly, Dr. Sun-Yat Sen Classical Chinese Garden rings in the Year of the Pig with a Temple Fair. Browse the marketplace, make your own papercut pig, discover new instruments with the VSO School of Music and more at this all-day event. 新年快樂!
