Shadows, Strings and Other Things: The Enchanting Theatre of Puppets
From the Museum of Anthropology at UBC comes this look at more than 250 puppets from over 15 countries, ranging from the whimsical to the frightening. Learn about the many forms of puppetry as well as the long history of the medium via immersive displays, stop-motion animation and more. Join after 6 p.m. on opening night (May 16) for free admission!

Maya: The Great Jaguar Rises
Or, if you’re not in Vancouver but you still want to celebrate #MuseumWeek, how about embracing the rich culture of the Maya, on display at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria starting May 17? Dive deep into Maya art, history, science and more through beautiful artifacts spanning centuries.

Experience the drums and dance of West and Central Africa with the incomparable Jacky Essombe. The Dance Centre presents one of Cameroon’s most energetic, poetic, and healing performers.

Heller Lecture: Vivek Shraya
Musician, writer and visual artist Vivek Shraya is everywhere, between the publication of her recent graphic novel, Death Threat, her NOW Magazine cover story on the monetized trauma of marginalized artists, and her just-announced role as one of the faces of the new MAC Cosmetics campaign. Hear her speak about her creative practice at the Orpheum Annex on May 15 as the Vancouver Art Gallery’s 2019 Heller Lecture.

Drawn from the headlines, The Cake sees a North Carolina baker thrown into a moral crisis when her goddaughter requests a wedding cake for her and her fiancee — that’s fiancee with two Es, as in multiple brides. Pacific Theatre serves up a topical and tasty treat.
