Every week, the BC Alliance gives you a glimpse at several must-see member events. Here’s a look at what’s coming up in the near future:

Vancouver Queer Film Festival
The yearly queer staple is back for another go starting August 15. Some first-week highlights: in Night Comes On, teenage Angel navigates the foster care system, the aftermath of incarceration, and a seemingly inescapable future in a film the Hollywood Reporter describes as “restrained, affecting and tenderly observed with a distinctly female gaze.” Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart tackle an infamous American murder in Lizzie. Toughman debt collector Dung finds unexpected romance in Song Lang. And if you’re in the mood for some blood and guts, hide behind your blanket for Queer Fear. All that, plus galas, performances, Q&As and more.
(Vancouver: August 15-25)

Song of the Seas
Film, film and more film as Reel 2 Real gears up for its Summer Film Series. Up first on August 16, Oscar-nominated Irish animation Song of the Sea, based on the legend of the Selkies. Check out the full summer schedule here.
(Vancouver: August 16)

Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts
Join Canada’s longest running summer writing event takes over Sechelt, with local luminaries including Eden Robinson, Rhea Tregebov, Alicia Elliott, Keith Maillard, Yasuko Thanh and more. Hit up the Coast for a who’s who of the written word.
(Sechelt: August 15-18)

Festival del Humor
Si gustaría ser entretenido en español, hit up Massey Theatre to enjoy the comedic stars of Mexican television. The celebración del humor takes place this weekend in New West.
(New Westminster: August 17)
