CAPACOA has released employment info on arts and culture jobs, acquired via the Labour Force Survey, a monthly survey of approximately 56,000 households. Among the findings: one in four arts workers lost their job in 2020.

“In order to provide a detailed picture of job losses in the arts, culture and heritage sub-sectors during the COVID-19 crisis, CAPACOA licenced access to custom employment statistics from Statistics Canada,” the update explains. “They provide an account of employment for full-time, part-time and occasional employees, as well as self-employed workers.”

The first update, Employment in arts and culture industries, December 2020, gives a general overview of stats around total hours worked in the cultural sector, with the cultural sector seeing a decline of 36.6%. The second, 2020: The Year One in Four Arts Worker Lost Their Job, focuses on lost jobs, and emphasizes that 11% of all Canadian jobs lost in 2020 were arts and entertainment jobs.
