Recognition Awards 2020 Guidelines
Since its foundation, the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society has dedicated its efforts and advocacy to contribute to the inclusion, collaboration, and social integration of Asian Canadian communities through its explorASIAN festival and programming. VAHMS is aware of the important role that many individuals and organizations have played in the achievement of integrating Pan-Asian communities in our multicultural society.
The Annual Recognition Awards recognize and thank those individuals or organizations that significantly promote cross-cultural exchange, contribute to the broader exposure of Asian-Canadian arts and culture in our community, and highlight those Pan-Asian communities that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Award Selection Criteria: Honorees for the Pan-Asian Recognition Awards will be selected for:
1. Leadership or support for Pan Asian arts, education, or culture.
2. Significant contribution to provide social integration of Asian-Canadian communities through cross-cultural, or multicultural exchange.
3. Achievement or contributions to promote Pan-Asian cultural heritage.
4. Enhancement of multicultural identity, education, or experience through cultural or artistic expression.
5. Collaboration with individuals or institutions promoting the advancement of inclusive learning.
Selection Process:
The Pan Asian Arts and Culture Recognition Awards will be convened by VAHMS with an independent, three-person jury/selection committee. An open call for nominations by invitation and by public search will begin from the beginning of May until the end of May. Award recipients will be announced in the first week of June.
Within and limited to this specific context, the following interpretations will be applied:
Our Community: Greater Metro Vancouver
Pan-Asian: an inclusive interpretation that includes East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Pan-Asian mixed heritage, and those who self-identify as Pan-Asian.
Arts: all that is created with imagination and skill and that expresses important ideas or feelings.
Culture: broadly interpreted to include expressions of a way of life characteristic of a particular group of people at a particular time.
Cross-Cultural: various forms of arts and culture interactivity between members of disparate cultural groups.
Multicultural: the presence of, or support for the presence of, several distinct cultural or ethnic groups within a society.
Education: the knowledge and development resulting from the process of being educated
The Selection Committee will identify three organizations or individuals for awards. Selected recipients will be confirmed as honourees upon acceptance.
Goal: obtain at least a 3:1 ratio of candidates to honourees
Details regarding the selection committee meeting(s) will be determined and led by the Selection Committee Chair.
