The Museum of Vancouver (MOV) has announced the appointment of Mark Richards as its new CEO, effective December 5.

An expert in museum transformation and operations, Richards brings over 20 years of experience working in national museums in the UK.

He comes to MOV following 10 years with the Museum of London, where he was instrumental in transforming the museum into a world-leading cultural institution, doubling visitor numbers and achieving record levels of income.

Richards began his career at the British Museum before moving to the National Museum of Science and Industry, which included the Science Museum in London, the National Railway Museum in York and the National Media Museum in Bradford.

He studied psychology at the University of East London and has a particular interest in social anthropology, public art, urban archaeology, and photography.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Richards has worked in museum management, change and business turnaround and has lectured on cultural transformation, leadership, creativity and the museum visitor experience.

MOV recently unveiled a new five-year strategic plan focusing on its position as a social connector, inspiring civic engagement and improving the institution’s sustainability.

“Mark’s deep expertise in civic museum operations and his track record of success in guiding cultural institutions through periods of growth and transformation along with his passion for culture, the arts and Vancouver itself are ideal qualities for our next CEO,” said Jill Tipping, MOV Board Chair.

Richards said, “MOV is a cultural treasure and I am pleased to be joining its dedicated team at an exciting time in its history. I look forward to helping it fulfill its potential and reach wider audiences.”

He succeeds the MOV's former CEO Nancy Noble, who was appointed as Director and CEO of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in September.
