Government of BC’s Destination Events Fund for Arts and Culture: A Driver of Tourism and Economic Growth

In 2025, the provincial government of British Columbia launched the Destination Events program, a funding initiative aimed at enhancing BC’s reputation as a leading events destination and tourism hub (Destination British Columbia, 2025).

Expanding upon the successful former Tourism Events Program, the Destination Events Program will provide up to $5 million annually to help communities host tourism, arts, cultural, and sports events (Destination British Columbia, 2025). The initiative aims to support hosts by covering costs such as venue rentals, equipment, staffing, and other operational expenses (Lunaba, 2025).

Some good news (for a change)

[caption id="attachment_65" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="Vancouver City Council"]Vancouver City Council[/caption] As many of you know, the Culture Plan was imperiled by the budget cuts and the hiring freeze put forward by the City of Vancouver. We are pleased to announce that amendments to the 2009 City budget have been passed by Council during their recent deliberations that allow the Cultural Services to go ahead with certain aspects of the Culture Plan. Many thanks go out to City Council for acknowledging the extraordinary need for arts and culture during this time of economic upheaval, and to our members and supporters who wrote letters and contacted City Council about this issue. Vancouver's cultural sector during recession

As most of you know, the Alliance has partnered with 2010 Legacies Now to host a Vancouver Arts Summit at the Vancouver Public Library tomorrow and Friday. Thanks to 2010 Legacies Now, the Summit was offered free of charge, but with the caveat that participants had to fill out a detailed survey on how they are reacting to current economic climate.
