Government of BC’s Destination Events Fund for Arts and Culture: A Driver of Tourism and Economic Growth

Introducing Destination Events: In 2025, the provincial government of British Columbia launched the Destination Events program, a funding initiative aimed at enhancing BC’s reputation as a leading events destination and tourism hub (Destination British Columbia, 2025).

Expanding upon the successful former Tourism Events Program, the Destination Events Program will provide up to $5 million annually to help communities host tourism, arts, cultural, and sports events (Destination British Columbia, 2025). The initiative aims to support hosts by covering costs such as venue rentals, equipment, staffing, and other operational expenses (Lunaba, 2025).

Through the program, Indigenous communities or organizations, not-for-profit organizations, businesses, or local governments hosting eligible events with a minimum budget of $150,000 may apply to receive funding for up to 10% of the total event budget, with a maximum of $150,000 per event (Destination British Columbia, 2025; Government of British Columbia, 2026).

Arts and Culture as Economic Stimuli: The Destination Events program was launched to enhance BC’s reputation as an events destination, foster economic growth, and increase visitation throughout the province (Government of British Columbia, 2026).

Key objectives of the project include stimulating local economies by attracting overnight visitors, creating jobs, supporting local businesses to drive sustained economic growth, boosting off-season tourism growth, and raising destination awareness to encourage tourism investment and repeat visitation (Government of British Columbia, 2026).

This establishment serves as evidence that funding arts and culture initiatives in extension funds job creation and economic wellbeing, marking a transformative point wherein the provincial government recognizes the impact that the arts and culture sector has on BC’s development.

Eligible Organizations: Organizations eligible for Destination Events funding include Indigenous communities and organizations, not-for-profit organizations, businesses, and local governments (Government of British Columbia, 2026). Individuals, educational institutions, unions, and federal, provincial, and territorial governments may not apply (Government of British Columbia, 2026).

Eligible Events: Events eligible for Destination Events funding include music, film, arts, and cultural festivals, fairs, rodeos, and exhibitions, spectator sport events, organized races, and festivals held on farms, orchards, or vineyards (Government of British Columbia, 2026).
