Established in 1971, the Abbotsford Arts Council acts as a resource for local artists while promoting the vision, creativity, and energy of the Abbotsford community through the arts. Over 70 local arts, heritage and culture organizations receive support under the umbrella of the Abbotsford Arts Council, and the talents of hundreds of local artists are showcased by the Abbotsford Arts Council each year at the Kariton Art Gallery as well as programs and events that are family friendly and open to the entire community.

Job Description:

Founded in 1971, the Abbotsford Arts Council is a non-profit and charity dedicated to showcasing emerging visual artists and musicians from the Fraser Valley and surrounding areas. Our events include monthly exhibits at the Kariton Gallery; a community gathering place for activities that advance reconciliation within the Downie Wenjack Legacy Space; the Jam in Jubilee and Mill Lake Music festivals; and the annual Arty Awards, which celebrate local artists. We have primarily operated in person but have expanded to include online exhibitions and vending opportunities for local artisans. The Programming Assistants will be integral members of the AAC. They will be primarily responsible for assisting with the overall coordination of the Abbotsford Arts Council’s summer programming, which includes curated exhibitions, public calls for community art, and two music festivals.

Responsibilities:

Assist the executive director, gallery & events manager, and Jam in Jubilee governance committee with the planning, preparation, and execution of all AAC programming;
Update the AAC website, online store, catalogues, and digital resource library as needed;
Keep track of attendee information in databases;
Document AAC programming, including Kariton and Downie Wenjack Legacy Space exhibitions, workshops, Jam in Jubilee, and Mill Lake Music;
Assist with managing and uploading all digital exhibitions;
Attend meetings as required;
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should consider themselves to have:
Excellent organizational, communication (trauma informed is desired), decision making, problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
Good knowledge of contemporary art practices, cultural sensitivity, dis/ability justice, and community building;
Be capable of taking ownership and adept at problem solving;
Be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and multi-tasking;
Be comfortable working in a team environment;
Experience in administration, retail, non-profit, or arts programming;
Having foodsafe certification is an asset.

This position is funded through Sto:lo Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (SASET); applicants must identify as Indigenous, reside within SASET's catchment area, be enrolled in full-time education, and are returning to their studies in the fall. Remuneration:

$20.66 per hour, 30 hours per week, 13 weeks
