The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is a non-profit and registered charity responsible for the operation of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site on behalf of Parks Canada. Our mission is to honor the importance of Canada’s West Coast fishing history by sharing stories of the fishing industry and fishing communities through exhibitions, collections, programs, and events. We are committed in all our activities to working with the Steveston community to preserve its fishing heritage and local charm.

Job Description:

We are seeking TWO individuals to join our Collections and Exhibits team as Summer Collections Assistants. Our team and working environment exemplify inclusivity and diversity. This role will enjoy a comprehensive training program to prepare the candidates for success. Summer Collections Assistants will play an important role in preserving, documenting, and displaying our collection.

This is a temporary, full-time position that will run for a total of 8 weeks, with some flexibility for starting the last week of June or beginning of July 2024. Generally speaking, candidates will be expected to work 5 days per week, Monday to Friday, onsite at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery NHS.

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Collections and Exhibits Manager, the Summer Collections Assistants will:
• Update the Cannery’s online Argus collections database system, including cleaning and migrating existing data into Argus, adding new catalogue info, etc.
• Assist with the Collections Review Project for the onsite artifact collections, including:
o Working in the collection storage and exhibit areas to inventory artifacts
o Moving, organizing, re-tagging, and cleaning artifacts as required
o Photographing and cataloguing artifacts, and updating artifact records
o Updating artifact condition assessments
o Making recommendations for deaccession and disposal of artifacts
• Sharing the progress of relevant collections projects with our members and the public by creating content for social media, Cannery newsletters, etc.
• Assisting with other exhibit projects and programs as needed
• Working with other staff to deliver special events at the site
• Other duties as required and directed by the Collections and Exhibits Manager

Qualifications:

• You are a motivated team player who can also work independently
• You demonstrate initiative and are highly adaptable and able to make quick, intelligent decisions based on new information
• You demonstrate attention to detail
• You have strong interpersonal and communication skills
• You are able to work in cool, dusty conditions and lift objects up to 25lbs
• You are dedicated to building diversity, inclusivity and fostering reconciliation within our sector
• You enjoy being a member of a team passionate about history, community and sharing our diverse stories.
• Previous experience volunteering or working in a museum, archives, library or other heritage or arts and culture organization is an asset
• Experience entering and analyzing data is an asset
• Proficiency in MS Office applications and high technological literacy is an asset
• Fluency in English is required, fluency in French or other languages is an asset

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs. As such, applicants are required to be between 15 and 30 years of age and must be legally entitled to work in Canada (i.e. you must have a valid Social Insurance Number). A vulnerable sector screening with a police service will also be required.

Remuneration:

$18.00 per hour @ 7 hours per day (35 hours/ week), plus 4% in lieu of vacation and benefits
