Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Founded in 1919, the VSO is the third largest symphony orchestra in Canada, and the largest performing arts organization in Western Canada. The VSO creates, curates, and connects irresistible musical experiences—performing 150+ concerts annually in its home, the Orpheum Theatre, as well as numerous venues throughout Metro Vancouver, and online. The VSO is one of a handful of orchestras worldwide that has its own music school: the VSO School of Music. The organization delivers extensive education programs reaching more than 50,000 young people annually, and community engagement initiatives that reach a further 100,000+ people. Maestro Otto Tausk is the VSO’s Music Director and the Artistic Advisor of the VSO School of Music.

Job Description:

The Education Assistant works closely with VSO and VSO School of Music staff members and musicians to provide exceptional, high quality music education programming. The Education Assistant has a background in music and music education with some administrative experience.

This position provides administrative, production and, programming, for the VSO’s Education and Community,

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

· Assist with the development and implementation of the VSO’s 12 Education and Community Engagement programs.

· Assist with creation of learning guides and lesson plans that accompany education performances and workshops.

· Assist with Community Engagement activities as well as activities integrated with the VSO School of Music.

· Assist with VSO Connects program coordination and supervision throughout the Lower Mainland.

· Complete research regarding schools and community organizations involving at-risk and underserved youth for VSO outreach efforts planned over the next 5 years.

· Identify appropriate community groups and/or schools who would benefit from ticket donations (provided by VSO sponsors) to VSO Kids Concerts, Symphonic Encounters, Elementary School Concerts.

· Assist in updating the VSO’s Symphonic Encounters program, considering how to diversify audiences, engaging senior citizens and university students, who have demonstrated an interest in this program.

· Help prepare, organize, and disseminate Education marketing materials, including creating regular newsletters and communications and overseeing mailouts.

· Help to curate and create content for virtual learning and online performances.

· Assist in the administrative functions of the Education and Community Programs Department.

· Respond to routine emails, as part of coordinating VSO Education Programs

Qualifications:

· Knowledge of orchestral repertoire and pedagogical concepts

· Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, busy environment

· Outstanding organization and communication skills

· be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period;
