The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra announced that Dutch conductor Otto Tausk will be its next music director, beginning July 1, 2018. Tausk will replace Bramwell Tovey when he concludes his directorship.

Tausk is originally from the Netherlands, and has appeared with organizations like the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC radio orchestras. He is currently music director of the Orchestra and Opera of St Gallen, Switzerland.

“I am deeply honoured to have been appointed as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s next Music Director, and have enormous respect for this orchestra, which has placed its faith in my music-making and orchestral leadership skills,” said Tausk. “From my very first rehearsal with the VSO, their drive, energy and ambition felt instinctive, and I knew that we could find a language together to write the next chapter, both on and off the podium.”

Tausk has appeared with the VSO in 2016 and 2017. He was chosen after a three-year search. Bramwell Tovey will remain VSO music director until his eighteen-year tenure concludes in June 2018.
