Waiting in the Wings, a play by the iconic Noël Coward,  is set in a retirement home for leading ladies of the British Theatre. It was Coward's fiftieth play, which premiered in Dublin and then London in 1960. One of the great romantic memories of the British Theatre, it was written for Dame Sybil Thorndike and her husband, Lewis Casson, who had served the theatre for a lifetime.

Coward wrote “I consider that the play as a whole contains, beneath the froth of some of its lighter moments, the basic truth that old age needn't be nearly so dreary and sad as it is supposed to be, provided you greet it with humour and live it with courage.”
