Job Description:

The School of Motion Picture Arts at Capilano University invites applications for 1 non-regular instructor in Costuming for Stage and Screen. This is a unionized position, and the successful candidate will teach up to 6 sections over the Fall and Spring terms. There is an option to apply for an additional section aa a lab supervisor.  The successful candidate may be offered additional sections in future terms pending scheduling needs. Courses have a maximum of 20 students and will be delivered at our North Vancouver campus. This position will begin on September 1, 2026. 

Responsibilities:

This position will teach Wardrobe Management, Costume History, Film, and Theatre Production.

Theatre Production takes place in both terms, and the instructor co-teaches and works with first- and second-year students as they plan, prepare and execute a main stage theatrical productions collaborating with the Theatre Department. The first-year students form the working crew while the second-year students take on leadership roles as Assistant Costume Designers, Coordinators, Head Dressers, Cutters and Key Dyer/ Breakdown. Tech week occurs on Week 8 or 9 of each term and evening work will occur during this time period. 

Film Production happens in the Spring term and deals with first- and second-year students as they plan, prepare and execute a short film production project with the Motion Picture Arts students. The first-year students form the set crew while the second-year students take on leadership roles as Costume Designers and Coordinators.  The first five weeks of the course follow our weekly timetable. Weeks 5-12 regular classes are suspended while Instructor and Lab Supervisor divide their time with students on their film productions. Weekend work will occur during this time period. Classes will resume at regularly scheduled time in weeks 13-14.  


The successful candidate will also be expected to support the school’s initiatives and provide service to Departmental, Faculty, and University wide committees. These duties include: 

- Supporting department initiatives and spaces
- Create and update course materials, outlines, and curriculum. 
- Participate in meetings, committees, and events at the program, department, faculty, and university levels. 

Qualifications:

Candidates for this position must hold a BA or higher (with a master’s degree preferred), possess a minimum of ten years of industry experience, and demonstrate a proven ability to teach adult learners. The successful candidate will bring comprehensive working knowledge of film and theatre production organization and operations, along with a clear understanding of the roles within film and theatre costume departments. They will be familiar with the responsibilities associated with Head of Costume positions in both industries, including the organizational and maintenance requirements essential to production workflows. 

The candidate will also have a solid understanding of backstage organization and operations, including the functions of Wardrobe Managers and Dressers. Proficiency with SyncOnSet, and other current onset supporting software, is expected. Additional working knowledge in a range of costume-related crafts—such as cutting, construction, or design—is considered an asset. An understanding of Western and non- Western costume history further supports the breadth of teaching required. Responsibilities also include participation in University and Departmental activities, contributing to the collaborative and academic life of the institution.

Remuneration:

$103.62 per hour
