221A Seeks support to create long-term, below market workspaces & housing

Cultural spaces are disappearing. Vancouver has lost over 400,000ft² of studio-space over the past decade. ⅓ of cultural spaces are rented month-to-month or leases under a year.

221A Artist Housing Society houses 30 low-income Black, Indigenous, and people of colour (BIPOC) artists.

  • Their open call for artist housing in 2021 received 477 applications in 2 weeks.

  • 221A provided $46,500 in emergency assistance to 61 artists renting workspaces, whose livelihoods were affected by the pandemic.

  • This year 221A is opening 825 Pacific Street, a new seven-storey cultural space with 24 artist and non-profit units, a public event space, and research library.
