The award was established with a bequest to Dance Victoria from Dr. “Chrystal” Kleiman in 2009. It was Kleiman’s desire that dance artists from Western Canada have the opportunity to learn from and work with the best dance professionals in the world. Her intent was that they bring these new works and influences back to Canada. The total value of the Kleiman fund, held at the Victoria Foundation, is in excess of $1 million. The Chrystal Dance Prize is generated from an annual disbursement of interest earned on the fund. In addition to Kleiman’s original bequest, Dance Victoria has been successful in securing matching funds from the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Endowment Incentives program totaling more than $435,000.

Previous award recipients include Victoria-based dancer Jung-ah Chung, Vancouver-based dancer Daelik Hackenbrook, and Vancouver's Wen Wei Wang.
