Top Indian Screenwriter Takes Residency At SFU

One of India’s premier screenwriters, Anjum Rajabali, has begun a residency at Simon Fraser University’s Praxis Centre for Screenwriters through to February 23, 2012.

During that period, Rajabali will conduct a five-day intensive scriptwriting workshop on the state of Indian cinema and introduce his own film, Raajneeti.

Call For Nominations: Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award

The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) has announced a call for nominations for the 2012 Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 23, 2012.

This $5,000 Award was initiated in celebration of PACT’s 30th anniversary in 2006-2007 and named in honour of Mallory Gilbert, who was Tarragon Theatre’s General Manager for 34 years and one of the founders and past president of PACT. The annual Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award celebrates and recognizes outstanding leadership within the Canadian Theatre community.

If you are a Vancouver based, nonprofit organization with an arts and culture mandate, you are eligible to rent for FREE the CBC's community spaces: Studio 700 and the Outdoor Stage - located at 700 Hamilton Street in downtown Vancouver. Studio 700 is 2,700 sq. ft. with a 12' X 16' stage and suitable for rehearsals, performances, workshops and fundraisers; capacity is 150 people .

The Outdoor Stage can accommodate audiences up to 200 people.

Gaming Grant Applications Update

Community Gaming Grants officials have confirmed that the first phase of processing Special Intake grants is now completed.  Groups in the Restored Funding Category (which were automatically processed based on their existing 2011 applications) will have their grants deposited within the next week.  

Over 300 groups will receive $3.23 Million in this category.

Evelyn Lau, the City of Vancouver’s third Poet Laureate, invites emerging poets to apply for a free one-to-one manuscript consultation at VPL’s iconic Central Library.

Gaming Grant Announcements "A Step In The Right Direction" Says Alliance

This week’s announcement that last year’s top-up of $15 million for gaming grants for social profit community groups will be repeated in the current fiscal year and, in Premier Christy Clark’s words, be “baked in the budget” for the next three fiscal years received some mixed reviews across the social profit sector.

However, the Alliance for Arts and Culture is seeing the announcement as a positive development, opening the door to further progress.

Applications Open For $14,000 Chrystal Dance Prize

Dance Victoria is inviting applications for the 2012 Chrystal Dance Prize of $14,000 from dance artists who are at different stages of their career and who have an international focus.

The prize is named for Dr. Betty “Chrystal” Kleiman whose bequest to the Victoria Foundation in 2009 created the prize.

It was Chrystal’s desire that dance artists from western Canada have the opportunity to learn from and work with the best professionals in the world and that they bring these influences and new works back to Canada.

The SFU sponsored Philosophers' Café will tackle the questions “does art matter?” and “if so, how much, and what would our world be like without it?”

Jack Lohman Named CEO At Royal BC Museum

The Royal BC Museum Board of Directors has named British cultural leader and scholar Jack Lohman as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer. He will assume his new position on March 26, 2012.

Lohman, Director of the Museum of London since 2002, will succeed retiring CEO Pauline Rafferty, who has led the Royal BC Museum for the past 10 years.
