Royal City residents will be able to attend conferences, visit museums and enjoy theatre productions when the new Anvil Centre opens in 2014.

On Monday, New Westminster city council announced that the new civic centre that's under construction on Columbia Street would be named Anvil Centre.

Ask Heidi Taylor, the incoming Artistic and Executive Director at Vancouver’s Playwrights Theatre Centre. In her role as dramaturg at PTC for the last seven years, Heidi has worked with dozens of playwrights, developed over 40 plays and created new playwright-focused programs, all the while absorbing the wisdom and advice of her mentor and predecessor, Martin Kinch.

The City of New Westminster has drafted a new plan to formally guide how it acquires and pays for major public works of art like sculptures, murals, and monuments.

Under the proposed policy, the city would set aside funds from its annual operating budget and establish a special reserve fund to cover the costs of new installations.

Community arts organizations come in all shapes and sizes. Some are small one-person operations. Others may be larger and have boards and advisory committees. Some have staff while others are volunteer run. Some have been around a long time. Others are just getting started…

Wherever your organization is on this spectrum, some basic questions about survival and sustainability come up.

Statistics Canada’s 2010 Performing Arts figures, summarized by Hill Strategies Research, tell us that private donations represent the third major source of revenues for Canadian not-for-profit organizations after box office and grants. Non-profit cultural organizations can run into legal challenges as a result of systems and practises in place that are not aligned with legislated policy or regulations. Sometimes it is challenging to know when legal advice is needed or what type of legal guidance is required to properly address an issue. This workshop aims to provide foundational knowledge and capacity to identify, plan for, and respond to legal issues that can arise in the management of a non-profit organization.
