Job Description:
The Gallery Assistant will support the Langley Arts Council’s Curator and Gallery Coordinator to implement, improve, and expand the Art in Found Spaces, Gallery Exhibition Program.
This position is being offered in collaboration with Culture Canada Works.To be eligible, students must meet all of the following requirements:
- Registered as a student in a recognized Canadian institution
- Legally allowed to work in Canada according to the laws and regulations of BC
- Either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a person granted refugee protection under the law
Responsibilities:
Answer phone calls, and direct inquiries.
Provide general support to visitors, members, and volunteers.
Communicate with clients, customers, members, staff, and supervisors.
Curate and organize exhibitions in the Arts Council’s gallery spaces.
Develop exhibition concepts, select artworks, determine their placement, and create engaging and informative displays.
Support artists and contributors through the exhibition process.
Write exhibition texts or labels to provide context and interpretation for visitors.
Maintain and update the Programming and Exhibitions filling system.
Assist in the coordination of opening receptions and artist talks.
Manage the display(s) and handling sales transactions.
Assist in the documentation and cataloging of exhibited items, including label creation and attaching identifying information when necessary.
Share information and work alongside the Events Coordinator and Arts Coordinator to support them in developing educational programs surrounding exhibitions.
Preparation and distribution of promotional materials.
Collect visitor feedback and compile reports on attendance, interactions, and overall success of the exhibition.
Collaborate with other team members to brainstorm ideas for future exhibitions.
Attend relevant meetings, training sessions, and workshops.
Create honorarium letters for photographers, artists, jurors, etc.
Adhere to health and safety guidelines, ensuring the well-being of both visitors and colleagues during the exhibition.
Qualifications:
Able to work independently and collaboratively as a team.
A keen eye for detail.
Be organized and responsible
Excellent correspondence (internally and externally).
Must be a team player. The Arts Council is a collaborative environment, and we are looking to find an addition to our hard-working team.
Someone who takes both initiative and direction.
Knowledge of the array of art practices and art history.
