Board of Directors

Organization:

Gender Equity in Media Society

Deadline:

Jul. 31, 2026

Organization Description:

Gender Equity in Media Society Vancouver (GEMS) is a member-based organization committed to furthering gender equity in film and television. Previously named Women in Film and Television Vancouver (WIFTV), GEMS incorporated in 1989 as a not-for-profit society registered in British Columbia. By addressing systemic barriers, GEMS works towards supporting more inclusive, representative media. Our offices are located on the unceded traditional and ancestral homelands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

By addressing systemic barriers we believe we are also working towards more inclusive, representative media. We approach our mission by:
Advocating and organizing for equity in funding, employment, and promotional opportunities for all women and gender diverse people in the film and TV industry
Providing low-barrier, accessible programming, including mentorship and educational events to increase women and gender diverse participation in screen-based media
Producing the annual Gender Equity in Media Festival that champions women and gender-diverse creators.

Volunteer oppotunity description:

The GEMS Board of Directors is seeking established professionals and strategic leaders to join our governance board! As a governing body, the Board provides high-level operational direction, fiscal stewardship, and legal oversight to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability and accountability to the community we serve.

We are actively looking to diversify our governance team by recruiting strategic thinkers from within and outside the film and television industry. If you want to apply your professional expertise to shape the future of GEMS and support creatives in film and TV, we encourage expressions of interest from individuals with backgrounds in:
Non-profit governance, policy, or law;
HR, staff management, or community building;
Corporate fundraising, accounting, or financial oversight;
Project/event management, social media, or advocacy.

This is an exciting and active leadership commitment that puts you within a network of creative and engaged professionals. This includes opportunities for networking, creative community and social meetups, skill development, and meaningful civic involvement! To ensure our board remains impactful and engaged, prospective members should realistically expect to dedicate approximately 10 - 12 hours per month to GEMS.

Responsibilities:

  • Monthly Governance: Preparing for and attending a 2-hour monthly board meeting via Zoom or in person.

  • Active Oversight: Devoting several hours each month to ongoing strategic planning, operational review, and committee work.

  • Responsive Leadership: Maintaining reliable, prompt email communication to ensure timely decision-making between meetings.

  • Flexibility: Attending the occasional meeting or organizational event as needed.
    We know how packed professional schedules can be! If you cannot commit to a full Board member role as described above, we also offer Micro Volunteer Opportunities.

  • These are short-term, project-specific tasks—such as advising on a contract, strategic plan, or financial audit, or designing high impact social media posts —that allow you to lend your specialized skills in a single, high-impact "burst" of expertise without an ongoing time commitment.

Qualifications:

  • Non-profit governance, policy, or law; HR, staff management, or community building;

  • Corporate fundraising, accounting, or financial oversight;

  • Project/event management, social media, or advocacy.

How to Apply:

If you are ready to invest your time and expertise to sustain and grow our vibrant community, we want to hear from you! We are recruiting in advance of our next Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September 2026. Please email boardofdirectors@gemsvancouver.org with:
