WrightSpace 2026

ORGANIZATION: Playwrights Theatre Centre
DEADLINE: April 2, 2026
WEBSITE: http://www.playwrightstheatre.com/programs/wrightspace/

CALL FOR ARTISTS:
WrightSpace is where Playwrights Theatre Centre (PTC) welcomes a small group of professional theatre makers to join for a short-term residency to work on one of their projects, with mentorship, funding, and space to hone in on an aspect of their project development.

Previous WrightSpace participants have gone on to continue their research and projects in unusual performance media across genre, such as Joy Russell (site-specific poetic play research), Chelsea Carlson (recorded investigation for land and memory-based storytelling), Tanya Marquardt (a play received through audio and text messages), and Scott Button (audio drama told through podcast).

This year, PTC is inviting dramaturg-led proposals in a unique partnership with Presentation House Theatre. Dramaturgs and creation teams developing site-specific performance, multidisciplinary performance, performance art, or other practices outside traditional script-based playmaking are encouraged to apply. Projects should be based in the greater Vancouver area and/or in relationship to MST territories.

HOW TO APPLY:
Applicants must be a current PTC member. Information on signing up or renewing membership is available on the PTC website. Lead artists must be based in the greater Vancouver area and able to travel to Presentation House Theatre (333 Chesterfield Ave, North Vancouver) for their WrightSpace residency time, and must be eligible to work in Canada.

Applications should include the following, in text or video format:

  • A completed online application form available on the website

  • An outline, video conversation, or other brief representation of the project

  • A description of the specific elements the team is seeking support on, or questions they hope to develop through WrightSpace (projects may be an idea, outline, or draft script and do not need to be finished)

  • Resume(s) for the applicant or creative team

If you are unsure whether WrightSpace is the right fit, you may contact joanna@playwrightstheatre.com with questions regarding eligibility or the project.

FEES/COMPENSATION:
Playwrights Theatre Centre will engage consultants and technical support as required to assist in executing creative proposals. Artists receive a stipend of $2,200 and should be available to dedicate significant periods of studio and writing time to the work during the residency. The schedule will be co-designed to create the best working conditions for each creative team.
